European Garden Award 2011

European Garden Awards by the Schloss Dyck Foundation and EGHN started successfully in 2010. The event occurred a second time on Friday, 2nd September 2011.

This year, we have only three categories, unlike 2010, when there were four of them. Let’s talk about the winners and finalists in each category.

Category 1: Best Development of a Historic Park or Garden: Villa Ottolenghi (Italy) by Pietro Porcinai

The designer has created a garden around the villa. This garden is in sync with the villa’s architecture and nature. For visitors, some walks run around the building. Plus, you will find a lot of Graffiti, a lot of wisteria pergola, a pool, and finally a cellar. Small arts are also a part of this garden.

Finalists: CHATEAU DE LA BOURDAISIERE (FRANCE) and ORPHEUS AT BOUGHTON (UK)

Category 2:  Most Innovative Contemporary Concept or Design of a Park or Garden: Jupiter Artland (UK) by Nicky Wilson and team.

Jupiter Artland (UK)

Jupiter Artland is a modern garden within the boundaries of Bonnington House, Edinburgh. Apart from Nickey Wilson, multiple other frontline artists have worked on this site.

Robert and Nicky Wilson in 1999 purchased the house. Due to significant fields, surrounding woodlands and gardens, they understood that this site is perfect for a sculpture park. Currently, this park is a charitable trust committed to being an educational resource for the educational institutions in the region. This place also offers annual residency.

Finalists: PARKS AND GARDENS OF ENKÖPING (SWEDEN) and FATHER COLLINS PARK (IRELAND)

Category 3: Special Award of the Schloss Dyck Foundation: Arley Hall & Gardens

Designed by Egerton-Warburton

Maintenance by Viscount & Viscountess Ashbrook

With coverage over 7 Ha, Arley Halls & Gardens exists for more than 250 years now. But, it’s maintained by the same family generation after generation. Hence, the site offers an unusual mix of long history, conventional design with lots of modern additions. It’s the reason why this site is vibrant in terms of vitality and atmosphere, which could be an inspiration for anyone who wishes to create dynamic works of art.

One of the primary attractions of Arley Garden is its double herbaceous border, which is one of the oldest of its kind in the UK. Gordon Baillie, the new head gardener, is trying to improve the landscape more so that the site can be found more on Instagram and Facebook stories.

Apart from all the plants, the garden also has a shop, restaurant, and much more. As a garden lover, you will get whatever you expect.

Finalist: PATRICK BLANC (FRANCE)
